Essential: Big Ass Fan's Haiku L Ceiling Fan
You know if a fan brand's heritage is being experts at developing some of the most efficient and powerful fans for massive industrial buildings, when they concentrate that expertise on a compact solution for the home, it's going to be epic. And, with a brand that's named Big Ass Fans, you also know it's going to be fun.
Living in a unique part of Southern California, Summer can hit over 100 degrees, and winters can hover right around freezing. Our house lacks significant insulation, so inside temperature management can be an art form. I installed this Haiku L fan a couple years ago and it has changed everything (for the better).
For the Uninitiated:
Big Ass Fans makes…well, you guessed it. Big ass fans. But, they also focused their engineering expertise to create a residential solution - resulting in the Haiku L, which is a premium, high-efficiency ceiling fan that can be installed in your home or apartment.
It's not cheap by any means, but I researched a ton of different fans before buying it, and this one seems to be the absolute best option. So, I think about it more around the long-term value instead of the one-time price.
So, why is it the best?
1. Effective & Efficient
I almost never use the fan at full speed, as the fan is incredibly powerful at pushing air. I find that even speeds 3 through 5 (out of 10) are perfect for the majority of the time. (However, if I come home and we really need to air out and cool down the house, I'll crank it up to get things going quickly.) And, the blades are designed to help cool thing down when it's hot as well as circulate the warm air from a heater when it's cold out - all without having to "reverse" the fan direction like a lot of other fans require.
The Big Ass Fans Haiku L also uses ultra-efficient DC motors that are up to 80% more efficient than traditional fan motors, which means lower energy bills and less environmental impact. Definitely a bonus, especially given the price of the fan.
2. Incredibly Quiet
Thanks to its meticulously balanced, sound-tested blades, the Haiku L operates almost silently. Even at high speeds, you'll barely hear it—no more annoying fan hums or wobbles.
The quiet factor applies to both the "chopping" sound that most fans make, where the Big Ass Fans Haiku L seems to be so much quieter because of the blade design, as well as the rotating noise, which is eliminated by the engineering that went into balancing each and every fan shipped.
3. It’s Smart
The Big Ass Fans Haiku L has the ability to be connected to WiFi and, ultimately, your smart home system. I have ours setup to work with both Alexa and Siri, so I can power up or down the fan (as well as the LED light in the middle of the fan) without opening my eyes if I ever want to make adjustments at night.
4. Dashing Design
It also looks amazing in a modern-yet-understated way. And, because of this, the Big Ass Fans Haiku L has won more than 75 international design and technology awards.
There are also a bunch of different styles, ranging from standard colors (white, black) to natural woods and even aluminum (which is VERY cool, and reminds me of airplane propellers).
5. Cool Breeze
The fan also has a setting called "Whoosh", which simulates the ebb and flow of a natural breeze. You pick a speed setting, and the fan will subtly lower and raise the fan speed back up.
The changes are so faint you don't realize it has changed, but the overall effect is really cool. It makes me feel like I'm lounging on a hammock feeling the cool ocean breeze.

Bonus: They Don’t Cave to Pressure
Not air pressure, but from the public. When the company started advertising a couple decades ago, mail carriers refused to deliver their marketing cards because the name was "inappropriate". Airports even covered the brand name so as not to offend anyone.
But Big Ass Fans doubled down and started sharing a gallery of letters and complains about the name on their own facebook page to help make light of the whole situation and, now, the brand name is beloved.
