Essential: The Casio G-Shock GWM5610 Series

Certain products seem to be designed to be used a ton but last forever.

The Casio G-Shock GWM5610 has been a constant companion of mine on adventures into the wild and on backing trips in foreign countries. It's tough as hell, and versatile as hell.

For the Uninitiated:

Casio has been around since 1946, and they remained pioneers in a few innovative fields as analog products were becoming digital. Their first digital watch was made in 1974, and their popularity increased rapidly.

In 1983 they came out with the "G-Shock" range of watches, which were designed to take a beating. This model is a classic, lower-profile design that sits closer to your wrist.

So, why is it the best?

1. You Just Don't Worry

There is a certain magic from knowing you just don't have to worry about something. Toyota trucks, Stanley tools…you know - you just don't worry about them. They just work.

Same for this watch.

You don't have to wind it, there are no moving parts to break, it's waterproof…you just set it and forget it. There is beauty (and joy) in its simplicity.

2. Crazy Accurate

One super cool feature is that this watch automatically calibrates itself in the middle of the night based on the closest atomic clock. That makes this simple watch accurate to the millisecond. Every. Single. Day.

(Note: you do have to have the watch semi-exposed for it to work. If I was in a mountainous area or it was in a drawer, it sometimes would let me know if was unable to sync that night - but trying a different location or having it near a window always fixed it…although the time is still super accurate even if it isn't "atomically synced" each night.)

3. The Biggest Power Source "on" Earth

This particular model has a tiny solar panel built-in that helps supplement the battery. Just help the watch get a bit of sunlight and the battery will last an extraordinarily long time.

I have had my watch for about 6 years and have not had to change the battery yet. Very cool. Good for the Earth, good for me/my wallet.

4. Slim Fit

While there are a variety of G-Shock watches, some of them are massive. These can snag on clothing, be a bit uncomfortable if you're laying on your arm, and they can look a bit ridiculous if you're wearing something a bit more formal.

But this particular G-Shock model is small and understated - equally fitting if I'm at a roadside street food vendor in Mumbai, in a business cabin with colleagues on a long-haul flight to London, or playing at the park with my kids. It's just right.

5. The Nod from Collectors

Even though this watch is in the mostly-affordable range, you'll still get a head-nod from watch enthusiasts, given it's classic/timeless design.

The retro look offers throwback credit, but it also fits into the increasingly popular trend of "unplugging" from the constant distractions of modern tech. I admittedly also love my Apple Watch, but often opt to wear my Casio so I'm not bombarded by notifications.

So, there you have it: The Casio G-Shock GWM5610 in all its glory.

Highly, highly, highly recommend. It comes in a variety of colors/designs as well - so find the style perfect for you and enjoy. For a long, long time.

For quick reference, the Casio G-Shock GWM5610 series X has a variety of styles - and, if you do decide to use the links I share, you'll still get the lowest prices that I'm aware of, but I will get a small bonus for helping with the sale! Thank you!
